03 Can climate change be held in check?
YES, probably we can still prevent the worst outcomes if we take effective action now.BUT, if we insist on trying to carry on with our wasteful lifestyles there will be a time when it is too late to act. Then we will have missed our last chance. Nothing we do after that will prevent the worst outcomes.
How close is the last chance? Nobody is sure but climate scientists who take ‘tipping’ points into account believe we are very close to triggering unstoppable, runaway releases of the trillions of tonnes of carbon trapped in the earth’s sinks. I would not matter if we stopped all carbon emissions across the whole planet, once these collosal quantities start to be released.
